Published by Ples Singsing

Ples Singsing is envisioned to be a new platform for Papua Niuginian expressions of creativity, ingenuity and originality in art and culture. We deliberately highlight these two very broad themes as they can encompass the diverse subjects, from technology, medicine and architecture to linguistics, music, fishing, gardening et cetera. Papua Niuginian ways of thinking, living, believing, communicating, dying and so on can cover the gamut of academic, journalistic or opinionated writing and we believe that unless we give ourselves a platform to talk about and discuss these things in an open, free and non-exclusively academic space that they may remain the fodder for academics, journalists and other types of writers alone. New social media platforms have given every individual a personal space to share their feelings and ideas openly, sometimes without immediate censure. The Ples Singsing writer’s blog would like to provide another more structured platform for Papua Niuginian expressions in written, visual and audio formats while also providing some regulation of the type and content of materials to be shared publicly.

  1. I was interested to see the announcement of your awards for creative writing by resident citizens of Papua New Guinea. As editor of Kundu, the journal of the Papua New Guinea Association of Australia, I am writing to say that our readers would be interested in publicising the awards, the authors who receive those awards and their books. This would be consistent with the objectives of the Association which include maintaining the positive relations between both our countries.
Would you care to begin by agreeing to my mentioning the awards in the next Issue- in September? We are a quarterly publication.

  2. Great initiative,I am very much interested to share my grand father’s experience. I know that everyone who shares their story would be something interesting for people to read regardless. Is there any specific criteria in place to do the assessment in order to select the best?
    What are the story categories?

    Thank you

    1. Hi Toxen,

Our judges will agree on their common criteria and we will put an article out about that as soon as.

For now, get into drafting your story.

There are two categories explained on the poster – men’s and women’s, and only first place and runner up awards.

Keep in mind that for really good stories and food writing there may be other opportunities to link up for publishing.

  3. I endorse Alone’s…idea to write up guidelines in how to write the stories. This information will assist competitors to write good essays.

And I’d like to announce here that the sponsor of the award Cr Paul Kurai would like to request the organizers if a separate category for students can be introduced (male and female). He will provide K1,600 extra as prize money for that category.

This will ensure more people win the prize and to avoid students competing against adults.

If the first Kurai Memorial Awards goes well, he plans to sponsor the event annually. This announcement will be made during prize presentations. He hopes to present a copy of the book about his family VICTORY SONG OF PINGETA’S DAUGHTER to each of the top six winners.

    1. Dear Daniel,

This is a generous offer and Ples Singsing accepts the suggested upgrade and upscaled competition.

Please convey our sincere thanks to Cr Paul Kurai.

      We will make further arrangements.

      Regards,
      Masterminds
