Big name leadership

1.

Your father
He truly has the Big Name
In all the places I visit
I hear all the folks
Praising his name
When they speak of all his works
The things he has done

My ears pop
Eyes and mouth open
What can I say about him
His is a real big man

The things he has done
During his time
Is more than we have done
And we can’t match his mark

2.

Our leader
Has many different big names
In all the places I visit
There are folk who talk
And reveal all his misdeeds
Report on all the things he has bought
All those hidden stories are told

Yours and my ears pop
Our eyes and mouth open
What can we say about him
His is a real big man

The things our leaders do
Are all done in their own knowledge
Their lies have gone beyond limits
And we their own folk remain ignorant

3.

My own Uncle-father
He too is the right leader
He alone will carry our village big name
Into the big government houses
And bring the fruits back to us
Twice we have sent him already
And we are still waiting

Our ears pop
Our eyes and mouth open
What can we say about him
His is a real big man

Whatever happens in Parliament House
We folks have no knowledge
There’s all sorts of papers, laws and talk
That always confuses our thoughts

4.

I too will also become a leader man
Simple folk say this when they see me
Right now is my chance to take
This big position in office first
Then do some side deals as well
Like helping politicians and Chinamen
That’s one way to get inside

Your ears pop
Your eyes and mouth open
What can you say about me
I am a real big man

Whatever I do
You have no knowledge to speak of
It’s my time now to rise
And you can stay the same and praise my name

Published by Ples Singsing

Ples Singsing is envisioned to be a new platform for Papua Niuginian expressions of creativity, ingenuity and originality in art and culture. We deliberately highlight these two very broad themes as they can encompass the diverse subjects, from technology, medicine and architecture to linguistics, music, fishing, gardening et cetera. Papua Niuginian ways of thinking, living, believing, communicating, dying and so on can cover the gamut of academic, journalistic or opinionated writing and we believe that unless we give ourselves a platform to talk about and discuss these things in an open, free and non-exclusively academic space that they may remain the fodder for academics, journalists and other types of writers alone. New social media platforms have given every individual a personal space to share their feelings and ideas openly, sometimes without immediate censure. The Ples Singsing writer’s blog would like to provide another more structured platform for Papua Niuginian expressions in written, visual and audio formats while also providing some regulation of the type and content of materials to be shared publicly.
